How do you interpret Revelations?

The Bible Interprets Itslef

The book of Revelation to most people is a mystery. With its strange symbols and frightening descriptions many have wondered "what does it all mean?" and have gone ahead and put their own interpretations to it.

The Bible however, interprets itself, and you would have to look to other parts of the Bible to understand what is being said in Revelations.

Revelation in Summary

The Book of Revelations basically tells us how the Kingdom of God will be established on earth. However before God's Kingdom is established a revival of the Roman Empire will take place. Ten leaders will come together to form an alliance (the beast with ten horns) together with a religious leader (the woman who rides the beast) to form this empire. It will be politically and religiously powerful, thus known as Babylon the Great.

During the reign of this Empire there will be turmoil and religious persecution like no other time before it. Idol worship and sexual immorality will abound, thus God's intervention to stop this entity (the seven seals). There will be a battle between Christ and a mighty army (Armageddon). Christ will defeat this army and destroy the ‘beast' and God's Kingdom will then be set up on earth - Jerusalem to be exact - to reign forever and ever.

The Interpretation

Now Daniel and other books in the New Testament would give you the keys to unlocking the symbols in Revelation. Daniel was told in chapter 12:8-9 that what was prophesied would be revealed in the time of the end.

"Go now Daniel, for what I have said is for the time of the end. Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined by these trials. But the wicked will continue in their wickedness, and none of them will understand. Only those who are wise will know what it means."(Daniel 12:9-10)

The Seven Seals

The message of Revelation starts with the breaking of seven seals of a scroll held by Jesus Christ, to reveal seven symbols.

The first six symbols were fully described by Jesus when he spoke with his disciples on the Mount of Olives in Matthew chapter 24. He told them what the signs of his coming would be.

The Four Horsemen

The first four symbols are commonly called the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Rider 1. False Christ

Revelation 6:2: ..."I looked up and saw a white horse. It's rider carried a bow, and a crown was placed on his head. He rode out to win many battles and gain victory."

Matthew 24: 23 - "then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah' or ‘There he is', don't pay any attention. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great miraculous signs and wonders to as to deceive, if possible, even God's chosen ones.

(Read also Revelation 19:12-16)

Rider 2 - War

Revelation 6:4: And another horse appeared, a red one. Its rider was given a mighty sword and the authority to remove peace from the earth. And there was war and slaughter everywhere.

Matthew 24:6-7: And wars will break out near and far, but don't panic. Yes, these things must come, but the end won't follow immediately. The nations and kingdoms will proclaim war against each other..."

Riders 3 and 4 - Famine and Disease

Revelation 6:5-6: "...Come!" And I looked up and saw a black horse, and its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. And a voice from among the four living beings said, "A loaf of wheat bread or three loaves of barley for a day's pay. And don't waste the olive oil and wine.

Revelation 6:7-8: ...Come!" And I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green like a corpse. And Death was the name of its rider, who was followed around by the Grave. They were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and disease..."

Matthew 24:7: "and there will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world..."

The 5th Symbol - Persecution

Revelation 6:9-11: "And when the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their witness. They called loudly to the Lord and said, ‘O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long will it be before you judge the people who belong to this world for what they have done to us? When will you avenge our blood against these people? Then a white robe was given to each of them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers and sisters - their fellow servants of Jesus - had been martyred.

Matthew 24:9-11: "Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because of your allegiance to me. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray.

The 6th Symbol - Divine Intervention

Revelation 6:12 -14: "I watched as the lamb broke the sixth seal and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth and the moon became as red as blood. Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth...and the sky was rolled up like a scroll and taken away. And all of the mountains and all of the islands disappeared."

Matthew 24:29: "Immediately after those horrible days end, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken."

The Seventh Seal

The remainder of Revelation is about the Seventh seal. This seal shows God's wrath on an unrepentant world and His judgment known as the ‘Day of the Lord'

The Seven Trumpets

The first four trumpets describes what would happen to the earth's environment including the water supply. (Revelation 8:7-12). Notice the similarity to the plagues that God sent on Egypt when Moses tried to set his people free.

The last three trumpets describes what would happen to the people when the refuse to repent of their sins.

The sixth trumpet (Revelation 9:13-19) describes a war that would kill one third of the earth's population. What John saw in his vision were weapons of mass destruction. He could only describe these weapons using words of his time.

The Last Trumpet

The seventh and last trumpet announces the return of Jesus Christ (Revelation 11:14-17)

Now keep in mind that all these events are taking place during the reign of this new and powerful Roman Empire.

The Seven Headed Beast

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

"And now in my vision I saw a beast rising up out of the sea. It had seven heads and ten horns, with ten crowns on its horns and written on each head were names that blasphemed God. This beast looked like a leopard, but it had bear's feet and a lion's mouth! And the dragon gave him his own power and throne and great authority." (Revelation 13:1-3). The Dragon here is the devil himself.

Daniel chapter 2 describes this same empire as a human figure in a dream by Nebuchadnezzar.

The head of gold was Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom - the Babylonian empire which ruled from 625 BC to 539 BC.

The chest and arms of silver is the Medo-Persian Empire from 558 BC to 330 BC.

The belly and thighs of bronze is the Greco-Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great which reigned from 333 BC to 31 BC.

The legs of iron symbolizes the Roman Empire from 31 BC to 476 AD.

The ten toes is the revival of the Roman Empire. God will destroy this Empire and then set up His Kingdom. (Daniel 2:31-45)

(Also read Daniel chapter 7).

The Prostitute (Revelation 17)

In verse 41 of Daniel the ten toes also represent the ten horns of the Beast in Revelation 13. These ten horns are ten nations or leaders who will come together to form an alliance and will be ruled by Satan (Rev. 13:2). The system of governance will be similar to that of the first Roman Empire.

The prostitute is a false religious figure who will rule together with the other political leaders. This is why she is depicted as riding the beast. In the last Roman Empire power was shared with the leaders and Popes in Rome. The leaders exercised their political power while the Popes their religious power. So a similar system will be established in the revival of this New Roman Empire. The people who worship the beast will have a particular mark. Those who refuse to worship him will be killed.

New Jerusalem

The Kingdom of God

Eventually God will destroy this Empire and its religious leader and set up his Kingdom which Christ and his resurrected followers will rule. (Revelation 18 - 22).

Other Books of the Bible tell of this second coming of Christ. Here's one by Zechariah:

Watch, for the day of the Lord is coming when your possessions will be plundered right in front of you! On that day I will gather all the nations to fight against Jerusalem. The city will be taken, the houses plundered, and the women raped. Half of the population will be taken away into captivity and half will be left among the ruins of the city. Then the Lord will go out to fight against those nations, as he has fought in times past. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives will split apart, making a wide valley running from east to west, for half the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south. (Zechariah 14:1 - 4)

Very compelling interpretation. There are also a few scriptures in Isaiah that align with Revelation. I will have to study this further and slowly to get everything you have written.

Do you think God has mercy on the ones chosen to do the bad things? I just wonder because it would see so awful to not be given a chance when called to do the unthinkable.

Do you think this time is now? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't and sometimes I beleive that it is all comeing true because we made it come true.

How does a person stop from worry even with Jesus, I become suspicious of even Him being the Devil.

How does a sister or brother help a one, when they have become to scared? Thats me.

Yes SirDent, you are right. You need to study the scriptures further. You can also read Jeremiah. I shall have to do some more hubs to expand on Revelations further.

sarndra rink. God will judge everyone eventually. It will be to everyone to decide to do what is right. The bible does state that there will be those who will deliberately choose not to worship God and it would be those people who would be eternally damned.

Everything that was written in Revelations is already happening in our time. We already have the European Union and the Euro dollar. Right now the world is experiencing shortage of food and high food prices. This shows that famine would eventually set in worldwide.

I will do some more hubs and expand on these theories in the coming days.

It would serve you well to read some of the books mentioned in your Amazon links below. You even get the book's name wrong (it is Revelation), and you ignore the clear statement in the book that the reference of the symbolism is to the past, present and near future of the author and original readers. In chapter 17 it says that, of the emperors symbolized by the beast's heads, 5 had already fallen at the time of writing, one was ruling then, and one was still to come.

By taking this apocalyptic commentary on the Roman Empire and turning it into something that is focused on OUR future, you simply ignore the meaning of the text understood in its historical context.

James,

I was answering a request, so the heading was automatic.

I am well aware of everything you said in your comment, but it would have been difficult to put everything in the hub. I did not intentionally omit anything.

There will be a rise of the Roman Empire in the future, and it's not just my own theory. As I said I will have to expand on these theories some more.

James McGrath 3 years ago

It doesn't matter whether it is your own theory or that of others - I am well aware that it isn't new. My point is that it is an ad hoc attempt to avoid the plain meaning of the text and make it refer to the future, rather than have it refer to the time in which it was written, which make much more sense and is much more straightforward. The only reason people don't like that approach is that then the book's predictions weren't 100% accurate. But riding roughshod over the text's plain meaning and saying "here there is an unspecified gap of several thousand years, and then the story starts up again" does more harm to these texts than acknowledging that they didn't in fact predict the future with 100% accuracy. All that means is that we don't live in a deterministic universe.

I'm curious as to why you chose to believe in this particular story? why not the Scandinavian sagas or Greek mythology? To me they are all one in the same, a search for answers that can't be found unless one is ready to accept the truth that none of this stuff is for real. I used to believe as you do, was all wrapped up in interpreting scriptures, etc. until I discovered that hard way that it simply makes no sense to believe in the writings of a book that has no facts and no basis in reality that are backing it up. I hate to say it but the bible is no different than any other relgious book in that is uses itself to prove itself. To me that is as incredible as using superman comics to prove that supermans exists.

Ivan the Terrible

It is all a matter of faith really. The bible is not just another book, it was written by God (through humans) for humanity. Science and archeology have proven that stories in the bible really happened. The things we cannot prove we must believe through faith and at some point it will be revealed to us.

Ivan the Terrible profile image

Ivan the Terrible 3 years ago

Can you tell me a few examples of science proving events in the bible to be true? Archeology tends to dismiss much of the bible, although it has found a place it believes in Sodom, although it claims that the underground workings of a natural Earth caused the fiery death of that place. I would like to see what evidence there is for a scientific acceptance of biblical events, however, so please take my curiousity seriously.

James says "unspecified gap"

but the bible speaks of this gap.

Hello Ivan,

Sorry for the late reply, I will do some research and write a hub on your question.

I just have a question about the "woman", the "harlot", for Revelation 17:18 states she is a City. My understanding, after studying the book of Revelation for days, is that the beast that rises up out of the peoples, tribes and nations (the sea) is Satan (the Dragon). Of his seven heads, one is fatally wounded and is healed (that head would be the antichrist, the second beast). The third beast is the false prophet (the one with two horns). My understanding is that the antichrist is the King of Babylon, the Whore (City of Babylon) and so forth. See what you find....this is very fascinating stuff! Indeed it is prophesy, because the Battle of Armageddon has not happened yet, for sure! Nor has the thousand-year reign of Christ when the dragon is bound. So as far as James goes, he cannot claim these things are past, in my humblest opinion.

western civilisation is the 8th beast! 336ad-330ad the image is here! the sun is blind, the moon is bleeding, the patient winds shall stir the trees

malcolm 2 years ago

336bc-330ad the goat, to the lamb, that speaks as a dragon, is, what the global image is, in a nutshell, 666, easy to see, he who has a strong forehead shall know, modern rome, they who pierced HIM will see

malcolm 2 years ago

the harlot, IS, global "chritianity" the beast, IS, global "western culture" she rides the beast, notice how a non "christian" and a "christian" in the world are similar, even though violence is not a cure one can understand the eastern eyes as they see the western beast, but, as its written, who, or what, can make war with the beast, the time is near, as the eagle standard will fall, this time, not to human hands

I think we are beginning to see the fulfillment of the scriptures today. Rome with all it's power did not control the entire planet. An interesting fact last Saturday Greece's Prime Minister at Copenhagen: “We are Observing the Birth of Global Governance”. If that we are also seeing Gordon Brown prime minister of England, and Al Gore calling for a world government. There are numerous articles practically everyday on the news saying we are about to enter a new world order with a world government. If you have not noticed these things then you need to realism that prophecy and scripture is being fulfilled. Rejoice! the lord will be coming soon to squash evil and put an end to suffering.

But do not think that we will be magically whisked away in some "Left Behind" style pre tribulation event. The cleansing and judgment will be experienced by all who are alive at the time of the coming of the Lord.

Yes, monitoring what is going on in the world now is a sure way of seeing prophecy come alive! It is happening, but there is still some time to go before drastic events take place. We must heed the call - watch and pray!

You did a great job. Very informative. I also believe that we are living in the end times, before the rapture presently. I think we are at least beginning to see the things that will be in place during the great tribulation, like a one-world government and currency.

For those of you who think that Revelation is not relevant to today, you have already fallen for the lie. Revelation clearly states that the prophecy sent to John was of things that had already happened in his time, things that would come to pass soon thereafter, and things that would come to pass after those things all the way until the end of time.

The book of Revelation says that the dead in Christ will rise first, and those of us still alive will join them in the clouds to meet Jesus.

Revelation also says that Christ will come back at the end of the great tribulation to cast Satan and the Antichrist into hell for a thousand years.

During this time, Jesus will rule the world. For the first time, the world will be free of Satan's influence.

At the end of the millennium, God will reveal himself, judge the world, cast the unjust into hell, and rebuild a new, perfect world where there will be no more suffering. We will worship God, and live with Him for eternity.

Until these other things happen first, the book of Revelation is NOT a history book.

Hi OriginsBlog.

Thank you and you are so right. Prophecy is being fulfilled before our very eyes. Jesus commanded that we keep watch and pray. We need to focus on what is happening in the Middle East and Europe as these places are central to bible prophecy. For me it is exciting times!

Aldar 18 months ago

It's weird you say we should focus on Europe and Middle East, but most people I know really believe USA is that new Rome mentioned in the Bible, the coin for international trade is usa dollars, if it is about mass destruction weapons look to the usa, false prophets: a lot of those in usa tv, if there is any war in the world chances are the usa is behind it.

Anyway unions like that of europe is nothing new at all, Japan, China, Spain, UK, and so on were smaller provinces or countries some of them united quite some time before the Bible was written, in that point the Bible is rather vague.

For all I know we could even be in that millennium in wich Jesus rules the world, most people eat better, live longer, there are less plagues or wars than say 500 years ago.

Nah I think the world belongs to humans and we are the ones that will end it, no supreme evil is needed, just lazyness will do.

LisaG profile image

LisaG Hub Author 18 months ago

You just have to read the signs and you will see that world is getting progressively worse. The US is no longer the "Superpower" it once was. The euro is gaining strength while the US dollar is weakening.

It is just a matter of time before Europe has taken over where the US has left off.

The millennium is not far off, but is certainly not here yet.
